Can we talk about how screwed up it is to ask this question anyway? Because in this case, The Lord would have sent the tornado anyway and then she’d be expected to thank Him afterward?

“Almighty God! You destroyed my house and kicked my life to bits! But you didn’t kill me or my baby so thanks! You’re so generous.”

This isn’t an attack on Christians  just an attack on assuming that somebody one talks to shares one’s beliefs, or even if they do share one’s beliefs, wont’ think that one’s way of engaging those beliefs is highly cold and offensive.
